NEW ACTIVITIES/DEMOS!

BIOLUMINESCENCE
In this demonstration, students will learn about bioluminescence, how and why certain animals glow, and the chemical reactions behind it. They will explore glowing water, glow sticks, and a glowing oil and water experiment to see bioluminescence in action.

ACTIVITIES/DEMOS

Check back soon for new demos!

Volunteers, please note there are two icons that have been added to most demo docs. The atom is a suggested interactive
component and the microscope is more science background, for your own knowledge, but feel free to use it in your presentation as you see fit.

ELECTRICITY
In this demonstration, students will explore static and current electricity, electromagnetism, and the triboelectric effect. They will investigate charge separation, voltage, and resistance by building a light bulb with batteries and pencil lead. Finally, they will see how electricity creates magnetism using a homopolar roller.
BACTERIA AND VIRUSES
In this demonstration, students will learn about bacteria, viruses, antibiotic resistance, and the importance of handwashing. They will play a game on resistance, use Glo Germ to practice proper handwashing, and simulate how colds spread through shared objects.

BUOYANCY AND SURFACE TENSION

In this demonstration, students will explore buoyancy, density, Archimedes’ Principle, and surface tension. They will see how density affects liquids and buoyancy, create lava lamp effects, and test Archimedes’ Principle in a marble-floating competition. Finally, they will learn how surface tension powers the classic Coke and Mentos geyser.

CSI
In this demonstration, students will review crime scene investigation techniques and their real-world applications. They will analyze handwriting, use chromatography to identify ink samples, and examine their unique fingerprints. Finally, they will apply their skills to solve a mystery.

FOUR SEASONS
In this demonstration, Students will explore the main events and major holidays during the four seasons. This demonstration includes a worksheet, where the students will have a chance to share their birth season and what activities they do during the season with the class.

LIGHT
In this demonstration, students will learn about the various aspects of light, including the basic characteristics of light, the splitting of white light, and Ultraviolet (UV) light. Students will be briefly lectured on the characteristics of light, then shown some examples of the splitting of white light, shown how UV light can reveal hidden messages.

MYSTERY POWDERS
In this demonstration, students will explore the chemical and physical properties of household materials while practicing observation and scientific note-taking. They will work in groups to identify six similar-looking powders using chemical tests for acidity and starch, as well as physical tests like touch and solubility in water.

PSYCHOLOGY
In this demonstration, students will be provided a PowerPoint presentation to examine many types of visual illusions. Different videos and pictures will show students the limits of their perception in certain cases. Students will also play games that require memory matching, as well as conduct a psychological taste test.

STRAWBERRY DNA
In this demonstration students will learn about DNA and how it is the fundamental coding system for all life. This is a highly interactive demo will allow students to work in pairs to extract and see the DNA contained within the strawberry. Students will also learn how their DNA makes them a unique individual with different traits than other people via multiple activities.
WEATHER

In this demonstration, students will explore the various aspects of weather systems including how clouds are created, how tornadoes develop, and gain an understanding of weather instruments. If the classroom has a supply of water bottles, students will also be able to make their own thermometers.
